100% Post Consumer Recycled Biodegradable Polyester

CLEAN IMPACT TEXTILES™ from Duvaltex represent the first Recycled Biodegradable Polyester textile for commercial interiors. It is also a step forward in establishing an advanced bi-circular economy model for textiles whereby polyester fabric, at the end of its useful life, can flow through either a biological or technical cycle. This technology allows Duvaltex to create high performance fabrics that are long-wearing in commercial interiors, but that can biodegrade in landfills and wastewater conditions at a rate similar to that of natural fibers (tested under ASTM D5511). Textile biodegradability is achieved through the addition of a bio-catalyst in the yarn-extrusion process that enables anaerobic digestion in landfill and wastewater treatment conditions. In addition, since these biodegradable polyester fabrics were designed and manufactured for recyclability, as are many of the Duvaltex products, these fabrics can also flow through a technical cycle, to be recycled and used as raw materials for future generations of polyester fabrics. This innovation for commercial fabrics addresses the problem of how to deal with polyester fabric waste at the end of its useful life, offering ...

3D macroporous electrode and high-performance in lithium-ion batteries using SnO 2 coated on Cu foam

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. To obtain the best experience, we recommend you use a more up to date browser (or turn off compatibility mode in Internet Explorer). In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. A three-dimensional porous architecture makes an attractive electrode structure, as it has an intrinsic structural integrity and an ability to buffer stress in lithium-ion batteries caused by the large volume changes in high-capacity anode materials during cycling. Here we report the first demonstration of a SnO2-coated macroporous Cu foam anode by employing a facile and scalable combination of directional freeze-casting and sol-gel coating processes. The three-dimensional interconnected anode is composed of aligned microscale channels separated by SnO2-coated Cu walls and much finer micrometer pores, adding to surface area and providing space for volume expansion of SnO2 coating layer. With this anode, we achieve a high reversible capacity of 750 mAh g−1 at current rate of 0.5 C after 50 cycles and an excellent rate capability of 590 mAh g−1 at 2 C, ...

EL CAJON — There is a scene in the classic 1941 film, “Citizen Kane” where an exuberant millionaire playboy Kane (Orson Welles) exclaims, “I think it would be fun to run a newspaper.” The context here being that publishing a paper is nothing more than a simple diversion. In local terms, Robert Zakar, who was raised in a family of merchants and has successfully operated gas stations, grocery outlets and convenience stores, decided to take a left turn and delve into — well, for lack of a better term — the body transport business. “When people pass away, we will take the deceased to a hospital or funeral home,” Zakar said. “My brothers would handle the actual transportation, while I would do the marketing and accounting. “At first, I did not want anything to do with removing bodies, it seemed pretty creepy to me; but when I thought about it, I realized that it was about the loved ones left behind,” he said. “I foun...

Doreen Fogle: Grow berries for the birds and Christmas

Bright red berries are California’s most important winter food source for native birds. And from a tough, beautiful evergreen shrub that’s perfect for landscape use! The shrub is toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), a California native living all along the coastal hills and the northern Sierra foothills. It’s also been called Christmas berry or California holly. The berries ripen around Thanksgiving time through the Christmas season, providing brilliant red berries on the wild hillsides. A client of mine said she always liked toyon. Her mother would bring in boughs with berries for Christmas décor. When I suggested we plant some in her yard she didn’t even know they grew naturally around here. She was happy to get some for her yard, and I want everyone to know what a useful shrub for home landscapes it is. Toyon likes full sun to part shade. It grows to about 6-10 ft. tall, sometimes to even 20 ft., and 6 ft. or more wide. It’s reported that it can grow to 10 ft. in three years. It prefers faster draining soils but will tolerate heavy clay and serpentine soils. If the soil is heavy watering must be reduced accordingly. As a native in the wild it does fine with the water our climate ...

Gift guide 2019: The best electric bikes, e-scooters, and e-skateboards this year

Who doesn’t love a great electric bicycle, scooter, or skateboard? Not only do they make great commuter vehicles, but they’re a ton of fun too! From small and sensible commuter e-bikes up to giant (yet fun!) three-wheeled e-bike monstrosities and even 50 mph electric scooters, we get to see and ride a bit of everything. That gives us the unique opportunity to sort through the mass of options and find some of the best choices for holiday gifts. Below you’ll find a smattering of electric bicycles, e-scooters, and e-skateboards across a range of styles and price tags. One of my favorite bang-for-your-buck electric bikes this year has been the Lectric XP folding fat-tire e-bike. These fat tire bikes are just so much fun because you can ride over just about any terrain with confidence. And with the Lectric XP, you get a 28 mph (45 km/h) and 750 W e-bike for just $879 – that’s a deal that is essentially unbeatable in today’s electric bicycle market. It’s one of the classic e-moped style bikes with a drop frame and long bench seat. You can even get a footpeg upgrade to carry passengers, turning it into a true utility e-bike. It only tops out at 20 mph (32 km/h) which is a bit of a bum...

An Engineer’s Guide to Laser Cutting > ENGINEERING.com

YPE html PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN” “http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd”> 1967 had the Summer of Love, Thurgood Marshall’s confirmation to the Supreme Court and—if you’re a hockey fan—it was the last time the Toronto Maple Leafs won the Stanley Cup. There was also no shortage of engineering news in 1967, including the Apollo 1 disaster, the Saturn V rocket’s first launch and the Concorde’s debut. Here’s another event from 1967 that was arguably just as important but didn’t get nearly as much press: Peter Houldcroft, then Deputy Scientific Director at The Welding Institute in Cambridge, UK began his experiments using an oxygen assist gas to cut a 1mm-thick steel sheet with a 300W CO2 laser. This marked the beginning of using lasers for industrial material processing. Now, 50 years later, laser cutting machines account for the largest segment of the metal cutting machine market, which also includes plasma, waterjet and mechanical cutting. In the simplest terms, a CNC laser cutter uses a coherent beam of light to cut material, most often sheet metal, but also wood, diamond, glass, plastics and silicon. Broadly spe...

‘We are very much looking forward to the 40th anniversary edition of Labelexpo Europe, set to be our largest show to date. Exhibitor participation this year has been truly incredible, not only in the number of returning companies, but also the newcomers joining us for the first time. It is astonishing to think that at the first show there were just 44 exhibitors – proof of how far the industry has grown in the last four decades,’ said Lisa Milburn, managing director of Labelexpo Global Series. New feature areas include the Sustainability Café and the Flexible Packaging Arena, while a host of educational opportunities are available throughout the show. You can read Andy Thomas’ thoughts on the show here, and Mike Fairley on the show’s 40th anniversary here.  AB Graphic presents a digital embellishment module, Digilase 4.0 laser system, B5010 Booklet machine and Advanced fleyeVision camera inspection and editing system. The digital embellishment module – Jetfx – for integration on the Digicon Series 3 converting line allows for multiple processes in one pass including spot varnishing, cold foiling and tactile screen. It features two inkjet heads with UV pin...
