Greeting Card Sales Have Stabilized, Thanks To Millennials : NPR

With increased channels of communication, millennials find that cards symbolize effort and send them for “cardworthy” occasions. Colin Gray/Getty Images hide caption With increased channels of communication, millennials find that cards symbolize effort and send them for “cardworthy” occasions. While email, texts and social media companies from Facebook to Snapchat have made it easier than ever to send instant greetings, more people — especially younger people — are sending greeting cards. Over the past year, greeting card revenue has been steady. The greeting card industry could bring in as much as $933 million this Valentine’s Day, up a bit from last year’s estimated $894 million, according to the National Retail Federation. Greeting card experts say it’s younger people and millennials, in particular, who have been keeping the industry afloat. And they’re buying fancier specialty cards, often with personal touches. “For Valentine’s Day, I got my mother a pop-up card that had a little cartoon that jumped out like it would give you a hug with a speech bubble that said, ‘I love you,’ ” said Ben Leeper, 2...

Welcome to another post in the series by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15

Welcome to another post in the series by Nick Locke, of Nicab Ltd, who has over 15 years experience in the electronics manufacturing industry specialising in interconnection cable assembly. This week’s blog post is all about trying to make sense of the conversion between American Wire Gauge (AWG) and our beloved metric system. We still live in an engineering environment where the use of AWG standard cables are prevalent mainly due to the fact that just like the US $, the American UL (United Laboratories) system is dominant world wide and generally more accepted globally than the British standards. (UL is a bit like our BS standard but is specifically governed and registered in the US. So, for example, say you are a manufacturer of wire: you send it off to UL, they test it, and approve it, and provide a E-Number, which means the manufacturer holds the rights to that standard a bit like intellectual property.) In the cable assembly business you learn your conversion tables off by heart much like your ABC, and times tables. Whether or not you like the idea of working in the Imperial System it is with us to stay, so to make things easy I have listed a simple conversion guide. AWG is...

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 vs Shelby Super Snake vs Mercedes-AMG C63 S Coupe comparison

Intimidation comes in many forms. Threats, blackmail, crowded shopping centres, the middle seat in economy, Mount Everest, an 800-horsepower Shelby Super Snake Mustang. You could probably chuck a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in there too, because few people are going to feel instantly at ease with a seriously supercharged V8 sending shockwaves to its rear tyres, and it doesn’t make me any less of a man to admit it. If you had to name a muscle coupe destined to expand the testicular mass of anyone behind the wheel, it’s one of these Yank brutes. Punters keen on this type of testosterone boost must be chuffed you no longer need to head Stateside to feel the burn. Thanks to HSV’s converting talents, Chevrolet’s ultimate Camaro is now right-hook-ready and perfectly poised to pick up where the GTS-R W1 left off at a somewhat eyebrow-raising $159,990. And, thanks to the column-shifting expertise of Mustang Motorsport, the thrill of a Shelby-enhanced Mustang Super Snake is also ripe for the taking, even in completely bat-shit crazy ‘Wide-Body’ form. Without the full plumping treatment, the Shelby Super Snake is already a formidable 169 big ones. But if you want the Wide-Body booty, that’s anot...

It’s been a long wait, but our latest single board computer for review is finally here!

It’s been a long wait, but our latest single board computer for review is finally here! The BBC micro:bit, given free to every seventh-grade British child, has landed at Hackaday courtesy of a friend in the world of education. It’s been a year of false starts and delays for the project, but schools started receiving shipments just before the Easter holidays, pupils should begin lessons with them any time now, and you might even be able to buy one for yourself by the time this article goes to press. It’s a rather odd proposition, to give an ARM based single board computer to coder-newbie children in the hope that they might learn something about how computers work, after all if you are used to other similar boards you might expect the learning curve involved to be rather steep. But the aim has been to position it as more of a toy than the kind of development board we might be used to, so it bears some investigation to see how much of a success that has been. Opening the package, the micro:bit kit is rather minimalist. The board itself, a short USB lead, a battery box and a pair of AAA cells, an instruction leaflet, and the board itself.  Everything is child-sized, the micro:bit i...

At Lift & Co. Cannabis Expo, ACG Showcases Liquid Cannabis Product Capsule Manufacturing Capabilities

The company offers Fluidocap liquid capsule fillers, combined with a wide variety of capsules conducive to liquid filling operations. Piscataway, NJ – PRESS RELEASE – ACG Group, a supplier offering end-to-end manufacturing solutions for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry, showcased its production capabilities in the burgeoning medical marijuana sector at the Lift & Co. Cannabis Show, June 6-9 in Toronto. As a longstanding supplier to the global pharmaceutical industry, ACG featured its prowess in producing liquid-filled capsules, a growing niche in the cannabis market as products incorporating CBD and THC are considered for pain relief applications in both humans and pets. For companies with medical cannabis products, ACG can couple high-speed encapsulation equipment with so broad an array of capsules, including vegetarian capsules and those designed specifically for liquid filling. From an equipment standpoint, ACG’s capabilities in liquid cannabis capsule production are anchored by two members of its well-regarded Fluidocap Series of liquid capsule fillers.  For R&D and scale-up or production activities, the company’s Fluidocap 1000 is a semi-automatic machi...

I explore the likelihood that Tesla will build Model Y cars in Lathrop, CA, with first

I explore the likelihood that Tesla will build Model Y cars in Lathrop, CA, with first production toward the end of 2019. Grading and construction are underway in China, and a new 870k sq ft building is nearing completion of the shell in Lathrop, CA. Circumstantial evidence implies the Model Y styling may be a “Shooting Brake” aka Station Wagon Sport Coupe. Tesla may receive $2B+ cash infusion in March for Model Y pre-orders, providing a surprise cash infusion likely to be reported during Q1 2019 Earnings Call in early May. This article explores the possibility that Tesla (TSLA) will begin building the Model Y cars in two buildings now under construction in Lathrop, CA, and Shanghai, China. This opinion differs from most journalists that think the Model Y will be built in the US at the Gigafactory in Sparks. I consider the recent comment by the mayor of Shanghai that claimed production in the Shanghai factory will begin by the end of 2019. Tesla may bring in more cash for the Model Y than the ~$400M that was deposited for the Model 3. The potential exists for 2 million Model Y reservations to be received generating up to $2 billion cash infusion in March and April 20...

CHAIN NECKLACES—like those actress and model Marisa Berenson layered so effusively in 1969—have never exactly been

CHAIN NECKLACES—like those actress and model Marisa Berenson layered so effusively in 1969—have never exactly been out of style. Dating back to at least the Roman era, simple links have been the basis for trends from the Belle Époque to the early 2000s, when they resurfaced as Carrie Bradshaw-style nameplate necklaces. Most recently, fashionable sorts are embracing distinctly chunky gold versions. Tiffany & Co.’s HardWear collection, a love affair with weighty links, was introduced in 2017. On 1stdibs, the online luxury design marketplace, sales of gold chain necklaces were up 80% this August compared with last; there, you can find dozens of substantial chains like the ones Jackie favored as she transitioned in the late ’60s and ’70s from a restrained Kennedy to a blingier Onassis. “The ’70s were a decade of expression and women’s rights and there are some political and social forces that are echoing that today,” said Cristina Miller, chief commercial officer of 1stdibs, speculating on the gold chain necklace’s comeback. The latest additions to the chain-necklace canon come from French luxury house Hermès, whose new jewelry collection riffs on iconic links. The chain is “suc...

View DTE power outage map as 12K remain without power

As of 9:00 p.m. Friday, about 27,000 people were without power, with Oakland, Washtenaw and Sanilac counties being hit the hardest. As a safety precaution, if you see a downed power line, stay at least 20 feet away from it and always treat it like a live wire. Also, never use a portable generator inside of your home because it emits carbon monoxide, which can be deadly. Keep generators outside and away from windows. Combination of Universal Mechanical Testing Machine with Atomic Force Microscope for Materials Research

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Surface deformation and fracture processes of materials under external force are important for understanding and developing materials. Here, a combined horizontal universal mechanical testing machine (HUMTM)-atomic force microscope (AFM) system is developed by modifying UMTM to combine with AFM and designing a height-adjustable stabilizing apparatus. Then the combined HUMTM-AFM system is evaluated. Finally, as initial demonstrations, it is applied to analyze the relationship among macroscopic mechanical properties, surface nanomorphological changes under external force, and fracture processes of two kinds of representative large scale thin film materials: polymer material with high strain rate (Parafilm) and metal material with low strain rate (aluminum foil). All the results demonstrate the combined HUMTM-AFM system overcomes several disadvantages of...

London Bridge attack: Man stabbed to death after hitting terrorists with skateboard to save woman, inquests hear

Court hears harrowing details of victims stabbed to death as they ran towards terror attack in belief car crash was accidental A man who attacked the London Bridge terrorists with his skateboard to save a woman’s life is among the victims hailed for extraordinary bravery in their last moments. Inquests into the June 2017 attack heard how eight people were murdered and 48 others seriously injured in 10 minutes of “high and terrible drama”. The area around Borough Market had been swarming with Londoners and tourists on a warm summer evening, when pubs were packed out for the Champions League final.   Relatives broke down as the Old Bailey was told details of the brutal attacks, which claimed the lives of French, Australian, Canadian, Spanish and British victims. Among them was Ignacio Echeverria, a financial crime analyst from Spain with a passion for skateboarding. A family statement read to the Old Bailey said the 39-year-old had spent a full day skateboarding with friends, “moving from one hotspot to the next in London”. “He had planned to go for dinner to his sister’s place but decided to delay his visit to later in the evening because he was really having a good time,” the E...

Spruce beetle outbreak increases in some areas, drops on others

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) – The current spruce beetle outbreak in Alaska is in its fourth year and while some places have seen an increase in beetle activity this year, overall, the number of acres impacted has gone down when compared to last year. “Last year we had about 593,000 acres statewide or somewhere around that. Quite a lot,” says Jason Moan, Forest Health Program Manager for the Alaska Division of Forestry. “For reference, the 90s outbreak peaked in 1996 at about 1.1 million acres impacted in a single year.” Moan and other researchers do aerial surveys to look for impacted areas. They concentrated their attention on Southcentral this season. “We haven’t processed this year’s date, but it’s fair to say we saw less active damage than we did last year or even probably the year before,” says Moan. But Moan admits that’s probably little consolation for those on the edges of the outbreak where activity is still increasing. “Certainly parts of the northern and western Susitna Valley are still on the increase, the eastern parts of the valley, as well as some of the areas in the western Chugach and parts of the Municipality for sure,” Moan says. “We’re see...
