The fire department issued a notice this week to raise awareness of the problem after an incident Monday in which someone apparently hooked up to a hydrant and took water. Fire Capt. Scott Vezina said it’s not a common problem, but there have been about a dozen incidents over the past 10 years involving hydrants being used illegally. “In the past we’ve had lawn care services actually use water to fill their 500 to 1,000 gallon tanks in their trucks for lawn care and hydroseeding,” he said. The fire department is alerted to a problem by an alarm that sounds when a hydrant is opened and pressure drops in the water system. Firefighters must investigate the problem. While Vezina said firefighter...

iRobot expands into STEM education with Root Robotics acquisition

Bedford, Massachusetts-based iRobot, the robotics company perhaps best known for its iconic Roomba autonomous home vacuum cleaners, today announced that it has acquired Root Robotics, a startup founded within Harvard University’s Wyss Institute. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but iRobot said it has already added the startup’s eponymous $199 Root coding robot to its product lineup. “The acquisition of Root Robotics allows iRobot to broaden the impact of its STEM efforts with a commercially available, educational robotic platform already being used by educators, students, and parents,” said iRobot CEO Colin Angle in a statement. “Root also helps increase the reach of iRobot’s educational robot line by offering a proven system for people of all ages, including students in elementary school.” Root is a two-wheeled, LED-sporting toy that operates on flat surfaces like tables, floors, and countertops, as well as vertical surfaces like classroom whiteboards. Judy Greer just directed her first film, the comedy “A Happening of Monumental Proportions,” about a dad who gets fired the same day he’s supposed to talk about his job at his daughter’s school. Given that she’s a veteran of film sets galore, including the beloved “13 Going on 30,” Greer wasn’t nervous. “I really like not having to go through hair and makeup in the morning. I have a lot more energy than I thought I did. As a director, you don’t have a lot of downtime on set, ever. I was happy with my energy level. This is going to sound so tacky, but I usually take a nap at work every day,” said Greer. “I know, OK! I know what I’m saying...

Must Read: The Fashion Industry Is Still Struggling to Pay Garment Workers a Living Wage, Fashion Nova Bikinis May Cause Cancer

The fashion industry is still struggling to pay garment workers a living wage The Fair Labour Association conducted a study in 2018 that found the average garment worker in Bangladesh would need an 80% pay raise to begin earning wages even close to the most conservative living wage benchmark the report considered. This finding comes years after disasters like the Rana Plaza collapse, which pushed brands to talk about the fair treatment of workers. And yet despite their efforts to improve working conditions, companies still squeeze costs at the factory gate. {Business of Fashion}  Fashion Nova bikinis may cause cancerAdd swimsuits to the long list of products that may cause cancer. My desk doesn’t deserve the $600 Dyson Lightcycle lamp

Like many of you, I’m assuming, my desk was purchased at Ikea and is the center of my life. Such as it is, the desk is littered with bits of crackers, memory cards, branded Moleskin notebooks and countless coffee cups. I’m not a slob. I just live here. The desk is clean enough. Then Dyson sent me its new task light to try out. My desk suddenly felt dirty. After assembling the light, I looked around and took inventory of my life and choices. If I was going to have something as lovely as this on my desk, I would have to have a cleaner space. I cleaned up my desk. The Dyson Lightcycle is, well, a light. It makes the room brighter. And because it’s made by Dyson, it’s over-engineered and expensive. The Lightcycle is $600 and I’m not going to attempt to justify its price. I can’t. This is a product that costs countless times over its utility. The light works. Hit a button on the top and it turns on. Slide your finger across the top and the light’s brightness and color temperature changes. The light is constructed with an insane attention to detail. It’s perfectly balanced. As the light slides up and down its main pole, a counterweight ensures an effortless motion. Likewise, the ligh...
