Two Weeks of Hell: Malcolm and Alexander Smith Gives Updates on Their Recent Injuries

Dunlop is the largest supplier of original equipment and replacement motorcycle tires in the U.S.A. and the only manufacturer of motorcycle tires in North America. The last couple of weeks have not been kind to Malcolm and Alexander Smith—or their families. Both were injured badly within a week of one another in early February. Both had surgeries involving plates and screws (and pins and rods), and both were, up until the 13th of February, convalescing at the same rehab center in Southern California, and in adjoining rooms. The strange ironies and coincidences go even farther than that, but we’ll let the guys themselves tell the stories thanks to bedside interviews done by Mitch Boehm, who co-wrote Malcolm’s 2015 autobiography Malcolm! The Autobiography, available at www.themalcolmbook.com. Six weeks ago, during the holidays, I was watching our large and extended family enjoying themselves at our home and thinking things were pretty darn good, with everyone healthy and happy. But two weeks ago it all went to hell in a handbasket in the space of just a few days when my son Alexander and I both suffered serious injuries in separate accidents hundreds of miles apart.  I got run ov...

Weekly resin report: Most spot PE, PP prices shed a penny

This site is operated by a business or businesses owned by Informa PLC and all copyright resides with them. Informa PLC’s registered office is 5 Howick Place, London SW1P 1WG. Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. Plastics processors hit the pause button last week, following a burst of aggressive buying, but overall completed volumes in resin trading still tallied above average, reports the PlasticsExchange (Chicago) in its Market Update. Fresh offerings for both polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) were a bit heavier and prices for most grades shed a cent. With contract increases intact for both PE (April) and PP (May) and ample resin supplies available, there was little need to chase material, though current spot resin offers present very good value compared to contracts. International PE prices and demand were both softer, but large volumes are still shipping offshore. Spot PE trading maintained a busy pace, with heavy volumes transacting ahead of the three-day weekend. The recent breakneck pace continued until Friday, when activity chilled and participants took early leave for the holiday. With contracts marking $0.03/lb higher since April, PE buyers ha...

Champion Drives Strong Results for Hanesbrands — The Motley Fool

Founded in 1993 by brothers Tom and David Gardner, The Motley Fool helps millions of people attain financial freedom through our website, podcasts, books, newspaper column, radio show, and premium investing services. Following a strong holiday quarter, apparel manufacturer Hanesbrands (NYSE:HBI) has produced even better results in the first quarter of 2019. While the U.S. innerwear business declined, strong sales in the activewear and international segments drove a 10% increase in constant-currency organic sales. Profit didn’t grow quite as fast due to rising costs, but the company remains on track to hit its full-year guidance. The U.S. innerwear segment has been a weak spot for Hanesbrands, and that continued in the first quarter. However, the segment performed better than the company was expecting, and segment operating income increased slightly despite the sales decline. Sales of innerwear basics grew by 2%, but a decline in intimates sales dragged down the segment’s results. Global sales of Hanesbrands’ Champion brand of activewear increased by 75% year over year outside the mass channel and adjusted for currency. This growth was driven by an expansion in...

So you’ve added a state-of-the-art press brake, and you’ve spent a small fortune on precision-ground tooling.

So you’ve added a state-of-the-art press brake, and you’ve spent a small fortune on precision-ground tooling. The press brake manufacturer promised that this new machine would repeat in microns, but for all your troubles, research, and due diligence, you’re still having the same issues that you’ve always had: inconsistent bend angles and part dimensions. Your operators struggle as they experience part-to-part variations, and your expected production goals are still just a pipe dream. You’re now second-guessing your decision to purchase all that new equipment. These modern machines will do what the brochures say they do, and the precision-ground tooling is so precise that you’re not experiencing a single height or tool-center issue. They easily hold the TX and TY axes. So why are you still having problems? We could point to various reasons, but the biggest reason comes down to a single word: tolerance. Every day your operators know to keep the bend angles and dimensions within the tolerances found in the title block on the print. But have you ever considered that the material you’re working with also has tolerances? And they involve more than just thickness variation. Sheet meta...

Indian food truck K2 Cuisine a vibrant treat | Dining Reviews | Colorado Springs

You should have seen Koushik Mondal’s face at May 5’s Food Truck Cook-Off, outside the Broadmoor World Arena. Though he’s been operating the Springs’ only Indian food truck, K2 Cuisine, for the last year, he apparently hadn’t been exposed to so many enthusiasts all at once, to the point where he appeared emotionally overwhelmed by the positive feedback on samples he was handing out. People were pumped on his food and he was pumped on that — he wore a big smile and a look of wonder tamed by humility. Later in the day, the judges selected by the hosting Small Business Development Center — myself plus James Africano of The Warehouse and Tyler Peoples of Springs Rescue Mission — awarded Mondal second place out of 32 entrants for one of his chicken wrap variants. He was overjoyed, perhaps feeling validation for years of hard work that brought him to this moment, when the general public and fellow chefs and industry folks confirmed what he already knew: His food kicks ass.  Mondal hails from Calcutta, which I can personally attest has a boisterous street-food scene; so a food truck concept here’s more than fitting for distributing the vibrant panoply of spice that comprises Indian cui...
